Interesting animals in Japan

Probably for most of you Japan is known for big cities, huge buildings and crowded streets. However I will surprise you! About 67% of Japan consists of mountaines and forests where a lot of animals live. Some of them are very similar to those living in our country - Poland.

The first of them are called Sika deer. The name "Sika" comes from the Japanese word "Shika" which means a deer. They look almost the same as a Polish deer. In summer their fur is red and brown with white spots. But in winter they change their fur and colour to dark grey with dark coloured  stripe running the length of the back. Sika deers prefer to live in coniferous woods. They are more active in the early mornings and evenings, so if you want to meet them you should wake up early. 


The next are called the Japanese dwarf flying squirrels. These squirrels are very small and fluffy. Well, the name of these animals is misleading. They actually cannot fly. Instead of flying they glide from tree to tree. Gliding is easier for them thanks to a membrance connecting their wrists and ankles. The Japanese dwarf flying squirrels mostly eat fruits, seeds, leaves and buds. They are active at night when they are looking for some food. I would really love to meet such a sqiurrel because it looks very interesting and cute! I hope it will happen one day!


And the last are called Koi carps. You probably may know them from some tiny ponds in shopping centers. The most popular variety of Koi is the "Kohaku" and it's red and white. These fish are very clever and intellingent. They can be trained like dogs and they can even eat out of your hand! Amazing, right? They will eat everything you give them including watermelons or apples. The Koi carps have to live in shaded places because they can get sun burns!

    Are there any animals that are distinctly different from European ones? The country is a group of islands and islands very often have their very own species.

My reflection 01.11.21

 A few days ago while I was on my way to school I listened to a very interesting radio broadcast. It was about a new law which the European Union wants to bring into existence. The UE wants to ban short-distance flights. By that they mean flights of less than 500 kilometres. The exception are the distances that cannot be covered by any other means of transport in less than 2.5 hours.  In my opinion that's a good idea because thanks to that we can cut back on  carbon dioxide emission  significantly. However  I don't think that it would work in Poland correctly as we don't have a rail network designed for high speeds. So, for example it would be impossible to travel from Warsaw to Szczecin by train in less than 2.5 hours. Of course in other countries  that have better developed infrastructure bringing this idea into force would be great and maybe it could help save the environment even in a modest way.

Reasons of emigration

Migration has existed since forever. Everything started when tribes searched for new places for hunting, fishery and their livestock. They also migrated  in search of more fertile lands and to create new settlements. But time has changed, the world got more developed and at the same time more complicated. People emigrate for many more reasons than a few centuries ago. The most important and common one is that they are looking for better opportunities. Many people move to bigger cities because they know that there are more workplaces. the second motive is to escape conflict zones. People leave their homeland because they don't feel safe there and they want to escape danger. Another reason is to escape poverty and find higher standards of living. Emigrants try to earn more money abroad and live in better conditions than before. Some people change their place just for fun. Ellis Island

Ellis Island is an island on Huston River between New York and New Jersey. This place took a huge part in history of NYC. It was opened in 1892 as an immigration station. It served for about 60 years and was officially closed in 1954.  In XIX century a lot of Europeans decided to move to America to find better life conditions. They all hoped for better life in the New World. Most of them came to New York because it was the closest American city to Europe. Also there is a huge harbor so they could get there in easier way than for example to Los Angeles.  The statistics show that  about 40 percent of all current U.S. citizens can trace at least one of their ancestors to Ellis Island. For millions of immigrants, Ellis Island  was the first place they set foot on after a long journey by ship from Europe.
