Polish district in Chicago

In many bigger cities in the USA there are neighborhoods inhabited by specific nationalities like Little Italy or Chinatown. We can find Polish districts as well. One of the most known Polish neighborhood is located in Chicago, Illinois. It's official name is Avondale but everyone calls is Jackowo or Wacłowo. In English this area is usually know as the Polish Village.  Most of the Polish immigrants came to Jackowo after American Civil War.  Avondale is considered as a  center for manufacturing and distribution because many blue-collar workers live and work there. We can find there shops and restaurants with pierogi and borscht, Polish banks, churches with Polish priests and so on.  On the one hand that is amazing and unbelievable how you can relocate one country to another. For many immigrants it is easier to start feeling at home when they are surrounded by people with the same nationality. But I think that I would feel weird, if I went there. I love meeting new cul...

Ellis Island

Ellis Island is an island on Huston River between New York and New Jersey. This place took a huge part in history of NYC. It was opened in 1892 as an immigration station. It served for about 60 years and was officially closed in 1954.  In XIX century a lot of Europeans decided to move to America to find better life conditions. They all hoped for better life in the New World. Most of them came to New York because it was the closest American city to Europe. Also there is a huge harbor so they could get there in easier way than for example to Los Angeles.  The statistics show that  about 40 percent of all current U.S. citizens can trace at least one of their ancestors to Ellis Island. For millions of immigrants, Ellis Island  was the first place they set foot on after a long journey by ship from Europe. In XIX century the average daily number of immigrants who arrived there is 1,900.  After their arrival they had to stand in long lines ...

Immigrants in New York City

In this post I will write about immigrants in one of the American biggest cities - New York. The city is famous for being a hub of different cultures, religions and skin colors. Very often it is called a "separate world" because you can meet there people from all over the world. Nearly a quarter of New York residents were born outside the USA. According to the statistics in 2018 the State of New York was a home to about 4.5 million people. Most of them come from Dominican Republic, China, Mexico, Jamaica and India.  In many books and movies it is said that if you want to achieve something great in your life, you should move to New York. People who came there say that the city is open to everyone. You can look however you want and do whatever you want and no one will judge or scowl at you. I think that it is the main reason why that number of people come there. They want to feel free and tolerated by others. Sources:  https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/immigra...

Immigrants in the United States

The United States is the 4th largest country in the world. It is inhabited by about 331 million people. In 2019 the statistics showed that 14% of the American population are immigrants. In number it is 44.9 million people. What' s interesting is that the United States has more immigrants than any other country in the world.  About 1/5 of all migrants live there.  Most of them are from South America and Asia, to be more specific from Mexico, India, China and the Philippines. When it comes to their jobs a lot of immigrants work in health care and social assistance or manufacturing industry. California has the largest number of immigrants of any other state, which is about 10.7 million people. Other very populous states are Florida, Texas and New York. In bigger American metropolis we can notice many neighborhoods inhabited by specific nationalities. One of the best examples is the New York City. There are many districts like: Little Italy, Greenpoint (Little Poland) or Chin...

Reasons of emigration

Migration has existed since forever. Everything started when tribes searched for new places for hunting, fishery and their livestock. They also migrated  in search of more fertile lands and to create new settlements. But time has changed, the world got more developed and at the same time more complicated. People emigrate for many more reasons than a few centuries ago. The most important and common one is that they are looking for better opportunities. Many people move to bigger cities because they know that there are more workplaces. the second motive is to escape conflict zones. People leave their homeland because they don't feel safe there and they want to escape danger. Another reason is to escape poverty and find higher standards of living. Emigrants try to earn more money abroad and live in better conditions than before. Some people change their place just for fun. They are young and free, they don't have any purpose in life yet so they are looking for some experience and...

"West side story"

Yesterday I went to a cinema to see the musical entitled "West side story". The action took place in the New York City in the 1950s. The movie was about conflict between Americans and Puerto Ricans living there. Both of the sides were poor and lived in slums. Americans couldn't accept the fact that someone of other nationality was living next door just like them. They hated each other so they organized a rumble to decide which of the sides would live in that part of the city. The story was based on "Romeo and Juliet" (there was a love theme, too). That's disappointing that people can hate others only because of their skin color or nationality. It would seem that the world has evolved and technologically moved forward so problems like this one do not exist anymore. Unfortunately, racism still reigns in the modern world. I really hope that one day people will change their mindsets and accept the fact that someone has different view, orientation, religion or sk...

My reflection 01.11.21

A few days ago while I was on my way to school I listened to a very interesting radio broadcast. It was about a new law which the European Union wants to bring into existence. The UE wants to ban short-distance flights. By that they mean flights of less than 500 kilometres. The exception are the distances that cannot be covered by any other means of transport in less than 2.5 hours.  In my opinion that's a good idea because thanks to that we can cut back on  carbon dioxide emission  significantly. However  I don't think that it would work in Poland correctly as we don't have a rail network designed for high speeds. So, for example it would be impossible to travel from Warsaw to Szczecin by train in less than 2.5 hours. Of course in other countries  that have better developed infrastructure bringing this idea into force would be great and maybe it could help save the environment even in a modest way.
