The Japanese Kimonos
The kimono is one of the most significant and recognizable symbols of Japan. It is a traditional Japanese costume. The word "Kimono" literally means "thing to wear". A long time ago the kimono was just a simple daily gear like a T-shirt for us nowadays. But times have changed. They are becoming less and less common on the streets. Now kimonos are worn by some elderly ladies and sumo wrestlers.
First of all the kimono is very time-consuming and uncomfortable. It often consists of even more than ten parts so it takes a long time to get dressed. Secondly they cost a fortune. One kimono can cost even a few thousand dollars! So not everyone can afford it.
There are many kinds and colors of kimonos. They differ in color according to gender, but also according to season. Usually men's kimonos are dark and women's color of kimono depends of the occasion. A traditional outfit is typically handmade of rectangular pieces of silk.
